5 steps
to help
What you can do to support someone facing domestic violence
If someone close to you needs support
Let them know you’re there
  • Listen without judgement. It matters to feel heard and supported.
  • Don’t force them to talk. Let them decide what they want to share.
  • Don’t blame the victim. Even if they don’t leave the abuser, show compassion.
Help assess the situation
  • Ask if they are safe right now. Is there a threat to their life?
  • If there is immediate danger, look for a safe place urgently or contact the police.
  • Help them understand this is not normal. Many victims don’t realise they are experiencing violence.
Offer practical help
Think about what you can do:
  • help find temporary housing
  • share contacts of crisis centres
  • help with documents, money, transport
  • support them in speaking to a lawyer or psychologist
Don’t pressure them: leaving an abusive relationship is difficult, and the decision must be theirs.

If there is a threat to life — act
  • Call the police or a crisis centre.
  • If they are afraid to call, offer to do it for them.
  • If they ask you not to intervene but the situation is critical, it’s still better to seek help.
